Gladiatus

Browser RPG set in ancient Rome where a gladiator fights in arenas, explores dungeons, and trades gear on servers run by Gameforge.

Overview

Gladiatus is a Gameforge browser RPG from 2007 set in ancient Rome. Each player creates a gladiator and tries to build a reputation across the empire's provinces. The game runs on many separate servers in different languages, and new ones still open regularly.

Turns are spent on expeditions against monsters, dungeon runs, and arena fights. Victories bring experience, gold, and loot, and much of the game is about improving stats and equipping better weapons and armor, in a style that recalls loot-driven action RPGs. Items can be bought, sold, and traded through an auction house.

The arena pits players against one another for ranking, and guilds let groups share resources and take on content together. Gladiatus is free to play, with a premium currency sold in-game that buys speedups, extra resources, and other conveniences.
