RuneScape first launched in 2001 as a Java browser game and is now played through a standalone client on Windows, macOS and Linux, and on iOS and Android. The main game, often called RuneScape 3, is distinct from the separately maintained Old School RuneScape.
The world of Gielinor is classless: characters raise nearly thirty skills, from Woodcutting and Herblore to Necromancy and Archaeology, and spend that progress on quests, bosses, minigames and group content. Combat uses an ability bar with an optional full-manual mode, and the Grand Exchange anchors a large player economy. Clans have their own citadels and events.
A free tier covers part of the map and skills. Membership unlocks the rest, and the game also sells extras such as Treasure Hunter keys and cosmetics. Desktop and mobile share one account with cross-platform play.
