Ultima Online

One of the oldest running MMORPGs, a skill-based sandbox in Britannia with player-built houses, a player economy and open PvP in Felucca.

Overview

Ultima Online launched in 1997 and is set in Britannia, the world of the Ultima series. It is a sandbox: there are no classes or levels, and characters improve by using skills such as swordsmanship, magery, blacksmithing or animal taming, up to a total skill cap.

Players can place houses directly in the world, run vendor shops from them, and take part in a player-driven economy built on crafted goods. Much of the play is self-directed: hunting, crafting, gathering resources, collecting rare items and attending player-run events. Facets split the world into a PvE ruleset and Felucca, where open PvP and looting are allowed.

The game uses a top-down isometric view and offers both a classic and an enhanced client. Endless Journey lets people play for free with limits, and a subscription unlocks the full game, including housing.
