BatMUD

Finnish-run medieval fantasy MUD online since 1990, with a huge open world, many guilds and races, and an optional graphical client on Steam.

Overview

BatMUD is one of the earliest LPMuds and has been online since April 1990. It is run by a Finnish non-profit association and offers a large medieval fantasy world with many races, guilds, skills and spells to combine.

The game is known for a steep learning curve and a lot of freedom: characters can focus on combat and min-maxing, exploration, or trade and merchant play, and the world includes player-built content and a player economy. Selling characters or gear for real money is not allowed.

BatMUD itself is free with no subscription. Players create a character on the website and connect with any MUD client (bat.org, port 23) or with the official Batclient, which is sold on Steam for a small fee and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.
