Final Fantasy XI

Square Enix's long-running subscription MMORPG set in Vana'diel, built around group content, a job system and two decades of expansion stories.

Overview

Final Fantasy XI takes place in Vana'diel, a fantasy world split between rival nations and threatened by beastmen and older powers. It was the first online entry in the Final Fantasy series and has kept running since 2002, now on Windows only after its console versions closed.

Characters can switch between more than twenty jobs and pair a main job with a support job, so one character can learn many roles. Day-to-day play mixes story missions, Unity and Ambuscade content, gear upgrades and older zones that were reworked to be friendlier to small groups. The Trust system lets players summon NPC allies, which makes much of the story playable solo.

Linkshells act as guilds, and a player-run auction house drives the economy. The game requires a monthly subscription, with a small extra fee for additional characters.
